Read about the treatment method for the exudative form of AMD.

Iniekcje doszklistkowe AMD leczenie

An intravitreal injection is a procedure that involves administering an injection of a therapeutic agent into the eyeball. Injections are mainly used to treat the exudative form of AMD. Therapy usually involves a series of injections, performed at specific intervals as prescribed by the doctor.

Exudative (wet) form of AMD

One of the symptoms of the disease is the sensation of “waving” letters. It is caused by elevation of the retina, in the macular region, under which pathological blood vessels have formed. The abnormal walls of these vessels allow plasma to pass through, resulting in edema and hemorrhage into the macula. Their symptom is the presence of a gray or black spot in the patient’s central visual field. The development of pathological blood vessels under the retina is likely related to genetically increased activity ofVascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF).

Treatment of the exudative form of AMD involves injections (intravitreal injections) with agents designed to inhibit the formation of pathological blood vessels – VEGF inhibition. Intraocular injection of anti-VEGF preparations can halt the progression of the disease, but no longer reverse existing changes.

What is the course of the procedure for intravitreal injection in exudative AMD?

The qualification of patients for vitreous injections in exudative AMD is always based on a complete ophthalmological examination. The procedure itself is performed in an outpatient setting by an ophthalmologist and takes a few minutes.

The administration of the intraocular injection is not painful. The injection is preceded by the administration of local drip anesthesia. Before injecting the drug, the doctor disinfects the conjunctiva and immobilizes the eyelids with a dilator. He then administers an injection into the vitreous body of the eyeball. The intravitreal injection procedure itself takes approx. 5 minutes.

After the procedure, a dressing is applied to the eye, which should be left on until the next day. The eye may be irritated and reddened. It is important to strictly follow the doctor’s instructions after the procedure.

Why should you benefit from intravitreal injections?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a medical and social problem that affects up to 1.5 million patients in Poland. Untreated or diagnosed too late, the exudative form of AMD can lead to irreversible vision loss.

Intravitreal injection with an anti-VEGF preparation is currently the most effective treatment for the condition. By opting for this treatment, we can inhibit the further development of this disease and slow down the process of vision loss.
